Home of Auckland Longboarding
The club was set in October 2003 following interest from a wide spectrum of surfers predominantly from the Hibiscus Coast/North Harbour areas of Auckland. The aim of the club is to provide a social, competitive and networking base for interested surfers/longboarders.
The club presently has around 108 paid up members (male and female) who range in age from teens to +50’s. The club has a low key friendly approach and is open to anyone who is interested (you don’t have to be a Kelly Slater lookalike or a pro-surfer). We welcome anyone keen to learn or advance in the art of longboarding.
The club is based out of the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club and meets up in the Surf Club bar at 7.30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. The meetings normally involve a general catch up amongst members, items/discussions of interest, video/photo reviews and the occasional presentation. Food and drink are available at the bar if desired.
The club has a great representation who compete on the National Longboard circuit in the under 18’s (juniors), open, womens, +40’s, and +50’s divisions. Phil Morris, Thomas Kibblewhite, Sacha Brownlie, Paul Culpan, Mark Hoyle, Nat Fitt to only mention a few so we are not short of good surfers.
The OLBC organises club competitions on a monthly basis for those that want to hone their skills or just experience competitive surfing/judging/organizing in a fairly relaxed atmosphere. The club competitions are generally arranged on the third weekend of the month, either on the Saturday or Sunday depending on the surf conditions. They are normally held on the east coast. West coast locations will be considered if the surf conditions are suitable for longboards.
A club ladder points system has also been set up to recognise those that enter club competitions. The ladder shows overall points and can also be broken down to juniors, open, womens, +40’s, +50’s or whatever.
For those that are interested in socialising rather than competing, that is fine. There are several members of individual families in the club and we encourage partners and family members (whether club members or not) to come along to the activities/events.
